Provenance: "Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat", Vincent van Gogh, 1887. "Sunrise (Marine)", Claude Monet, 1873. This new series will be exploring the quintessential artist living in this century – a tortured creative who is desperately struggling for fame, artistic recognition and a bite to eat especially since selling my art is now my main source of income. The works are direct and confrontational in the messaging to reflect the my desires and disillusions when labouring to build my reputation in the art world. The series should be taken as a literal expression of my attempts to build my own artistic identity. However, it is also reflective of our own emotions and needs where virality and popularity have become the language of the now especially on social media.
